Case Study

AMAC Air-conditioning
Air conditioning installation, Royal Mail Manchester
Project specification: Server room cooling

Design criteria: It was calculated that for this particular project the server room was undergoing a heat gain of ~29KW and so a 30KW system was designed based on this. In accordance to the clients’ specification we also factored in a 33% increase in supplied duty to cater for any future server expansion, thus taking the total design to 40KW. We felt that to give the client some diversity to the system in the event of a breakdown or similar we would split this up by installing 4 x 10KW wall mounted type systems.

Scope of works: To remove 3 x cassette type air-conditioning systems and replace these with 4 x wall mounted split systems. All these works were to be carried out whilst ensuring the temperature of the server room didn’t exceed 27ºC. In order to do this we installed two temporary mobile air-conditioning units, which we hold in stock.

Method of installation:
In order to ensure a smooth installation for our client, we firstly installed 2 mobile air-conditioning units so as to ensure correct operating conditions for the server equipment. We then installed the new wall mounted systems inside the server room, routing the pipe-work and cable up through into the ceiling. These services were then run on cable tray to outside, down the wall and along to each condensing unit.

Once the installation was complete the systems were pressure tested to manufacturers’ guidelines over a 24hr period, and then the correct amount of refrigerant was charged into each system. The systems were then turned on and fully commissioned. Once they were running to optimum capacity the old systems were decommissioned by the disconnection and safe isolation of all mains electrics. The old R22 gas was recovered into a reclaim bottle ready for incineration in accordance with the appropriate governing bodies. The old indoor/outdoor units and pipes/cables were then removed and taken away for recycling.
Completion & hand-over: Once all systems had been commissioned, a written record of the gas charge, commissioning data and manufacturers details were recorded and forwarded on to the client so that current on site records could be updated to comply with all “F Gas” legislations.
